User submitted photo of Bruneau Idaho

The Bruneau Sand Dunes are about an hour from downtown Boise making it an easy destination for a day trip or camping trip from the Boise area. It is home to the tallest single-structured sand dune in the United States at 470 feet tall.

Along with playing at the sand dunes, you can visit a Visitor Center, play in a few small lakes, and visit the Bruneau Sand Dunes Observatory.

Here are the entrance and camping fees:

  • Vehicle: $7/vehicle
  • Campsite without hookups: $14-$17/night
  • Campsite with electric hookups: $29/night

If you are interested in sandboarding, you can bring your own sled or rent a wooden sandboard from the visitor center. They offer both sit-down and standing boards.

Another highlight of the park is the observatory. From April through October, you can listen to a presentation and look through the telescopes at the observatory. Presentations run Friday and Saturday nights.

Tip: Bring a black light to find scorpions at night!
