Use the international terminal at Chiang Mai airport if you're leaving Thailand, even if you're connecting through another Thai city

  • Even if you're connecting through another Thai city (like Bangkok), you still go to the international terminal, check in at the international counter, go to the international departure hall, and go through the customs area
  • This is a unique set up in Thailand, called C.I.Q. Airlines may have their own names for it (for e.g. Air Asia calls it Fly Thru)
  • Basically you clear Thai customs in the origin city instead of connecting city. In your connecting city you go through a special lane for C.I.Q. passengers; this helps you avoid having to take out your luggage in the connecting city and go through another check in process there and shorten the connection time massively
  • The airline should give you a sticker to put on your shirt, indicating that you're a C.I.Q. passenger. The one I got looked like this:User submitted photo of Chiang Mai International Airport
  • In your connecting city (e.g. Bangkok), just check with your airline's ground staff or follow C.I.Q. signs, like this:User submitted photo of Chiang Mai International Airport
