How to extend your tourist visa in Colombia

  • In case you extend your tourist visa in Colombia, you'll have to pay a fine that usually starts at COP 300,000 and increases depending on the number of days you overstayed your visa. Should you overstay your tourist visa by a period of more than 6 months you'll be deported and you'll have to leave Colombia immediately.

What to do if you overstay?

  • To avoid being fined ask for a temporary permit ( Salvoconducto) about two weeks before your tourist visa expires.
  • You should submit your visa renewal application at least 5 days before your tourist visa expires. You don't have to visit the migration office since this service is fully online. However, for last-minute visa renewal, you'll have to visit Migracion Colombia offices.
  • Once you have filled your tourist visa extension form you'll upload the following documents in PDF.
  1. Your passport
  2. Your current Colombian tourist visa- it's not really a visa but rather a stamp on your passport.
  3. Proof of later departure ( departure ticket)
  • Once you've submitted all these documents online you'll receive a response in a period of less than 48 hours. If your application was approved you'll proceed to pay a tourist visa extension fee of COP$ 60000. Paying instructions will be emailed to you.
  • After payment, you'll receive a document via email indicating that your tourist visa has been extended print it and attach it to your passport.
  • Alternatively, you can extend your tourist visa by exiting Colombia and re-entering the country with a new tourist visa.
