How to get to Essaouira from Marrakech

  • There's no train between Marrakech and Essaouira. Bus is the only option
  • I think there are 2 bus companies that run this route. I took Supratours. Their website is http://www.supratours.ma/en/ where you can check the bus schedule. I forgot the name of the other one
  • Here's how to you get to Essaouira with Supratours:

Step 1: Get to the Supratours bus station

  • The departing station from Marrakech is right by the train station. Here's a map of where it is. It sits right on the road - you won't miss it

  • If you don't have a lot of luggage, you can just walk from the old town to the bus station. The walk is about 40 minutes. If you take a taxi instead, don't pay more than 50 dirhams for it ($5.2 USD). My Airbnb host told me it should only cost 40 dirhams. You'll find a lot fo taxis around the big square
  • The entire stretch between the old town and the train/bus station is in a pretty upscale neighbourhood and it felt safe on foot

Step 2: Buy tickets

  • Try to get to the bus station 20-30 minutes before the scheduled departure
  • Price was 75 dirhams per person each way ($7.8 USD)

Step 3: The bus ride

  • The bus ride takes about 3 hours
  • There's a short break at the halfway point where you can use restrooms and buy snacks
  • There's no wifi or anything like that on the bus so bring your own entertainment

Step 4: Arrive and buy the return ticket

  • The returning bus seats are in high demand. Buy the return tickets as soon as you get off the bus in Essaouira
  • The Supratours bus station in Essaouira is very close to the center. It's about 10-15 minute walk on foot. Here's a map

Yesterday

There are now also shuttles buses doing this route - the price is 15 euros and they collect and drop you directly at your hostel/hotel www.souktosurf.com Quicker and easier than the bus and you can book your ticket online :)
