Flores city in northern Guatemala is a gateway to magnificent ruins of ancient Mayan town of Tikal and more remote, 5-day jungle trek to El Mirador (more about it in here https://www.thetravelbrief.com/briefs/el-mirador-el-mirador-lost-city-of-mayan)
Located 500km from the capital city it takes an overnight bus or a flight to get there, but let me tell you all the options
Get the 1st class overnight bus from Guatemala City.
- If you are coming from Antigua to Guatemala city first, buy the latest one that departs at 7 pm. It will take you straight to the main bus terminal in Guatemala city
- Then you will need to buy your night bus ticket. I recommend buying the one that leaves from the bus station at 9 pm or 10 pm.
These are both luxury buses so you will have comfortable semi-bed seats, snacks, wifi, aircon and a bathroom on board. It is a little more expensive than others but worth it. The only difference is that the 1st class is a little nicer and it only makes 3 stops. The 2nd class bus will stop many times along the way.
You will arrive in Flores around 6 or 7 am.
The price is 220Qu - around 25Eu/$
Of course, you can save some extra money and go on an uncomfortable 2-day journey on local buses.
You will need to change several times, and it's never clear when the bus will leave or arrive. but for adventurous people that is a great option.
There are direct flights from Guatemala City to Flores. The cost of a one-way flight varies from around $100 up to $300. It takes 1 hour and both airports have shuttles and taxis that can take you from the airports to your accommodation or straight to ruins of Tikal.
How to get to Tikal
Shuttle buses from Flores to Tikal run from 3.30 am to 1.30 pm and you can ask for a guided or unguided tour in English or Spanish. Ask for more updated info in your hotel.
