Best way to get to Hangzhou from Shanghai

  • Distance between Hangzhou and Shanghai is only about 110 miles (180 kilometers)
  • The best way to go to Hangzhou from Shanghai is to take the high speed trains
  • High speed trains take 45 minutes - 1 hour to get to Hangzhou (takes 1 hour - 1h30min back from Hangzhou for some reason)
  • All high speed trains to Hangzhou leave from the Hongqiao Railway Station in Shanghai. Most of them arrive at Hangzhou East Railway Station, but a few arrive at Hangzhou Railway Station as well. Hangzhou Railway Station is much closer to the central/touristic part of Hangzhou. But both of these stations are on the metro line
  • Only costs ¥73 ($10) each way in the second class
  • There are a lot of departures every day (over 100 departures) on this route. So unless you're going around Chinese New Year in Feb/Mar, you should be able to just buy a ticket on the day of and get a seat without issues
  • Use Ctrip to look up the schedules. If you're really concerned about availability, you can always just book online. Again, Ctrip is probably the best website to book trains in China. Alternatively you can just go to any train station in China to book train tickets up to 30 days in advance. If you buy at the train station, bring cash and passport!
  • It's completely feasible to do day trips from Shanghai to Hangzhou, catching an early morning train there and an evening train back
