Where and how to buy SIM card in Hanoi International Airport

  • Getting a SIM card at the Noi Bai Airport is very easy. All three major telecom companies in Vietnam (Mobifone, Viettel, Vinaphone) have stores at the arrival area in terminal 2, the international terminal that most tourists land in
  • Price:
  • The exact price varies all the time depending on what deal is available from each telecom
  • But the most common plan costs around 200,000VND ($9USD) for about 7GB of data that you can use for 7 days. All three telecoms have something like this on offer. There are also plans with talk time added on as well but I'm not sure how much they cost
  • Avoid buying any plans that offer you unlimited data. It's usually false advertising (I know it's hard to believe that shops belonging to major telecom companies do this but it does happen). Just pick a plan that covers the number of days you're in Vietnam and with enough data for your expected usage
  • Keep in mind that the prices you get at the airport is around 50% higher than the equivalent plan you can get in town. So if you don't mind waiting, you can go to Viettel, Mobifone, or Vinaphone store in the Old Quarter or anywhere in downtown Hanoi and get the same amount of data for less than 135,000VND for 7GB of data
  • You need cash VND to buy the SIM cards as these telecom shops won't accept international credit cards for payment. Luckily there are also a lot of currency exchange shops in the arrival hall, so you can just convert some money first. The exchange rates at the airport is actually extremely similar to what you can get in town, so I recommend converting as much money as you need at the airport

  • SIM card store hours: telecom shops operate from 6am to 2am daily

  • How to find the SIM card stores:
  • After you pick up your luggage, exit the customs door, and you will be in the arrival hall (you're still inside the terminal building)
  • The telecom shops are located on both ends of the arrival hall, so you can either turn left or turn right, and walk towards either of the two ends of the hall, and you will see their shops

  • The telecom shops will have clear signs with their names visible in big letters. This is what the shop for Mobifone looks like in terminal 2:User submitted photo of Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport

  • Which telecom provider to choose: price is obviously a factor, but honestly in Noi Bai airport all three telecom stores have very similar offers. The main consideration is 4G coverage of each telecom
  • I recommend going with Viettel because it has the biggest coverage in Vietnam. Here's the coverage map:User submitted photo of Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport
  • Vinaphone also has good coverage. Their service fails in really remote areas which most tourists don't visit:User submitted photo of Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport
  • Mobifone has the least coverage. In northern Vietnam, it's fine in Hanoi and Halong Bay area. It's also fine in the south around HCMC. But the service will be bad in most of the countryside. Frankly this is not an issue for most tourists, but if you plan do a motorcycle trip across Vietnam, you may want to avoid MobifoneUser submitted photo of Hanoi Noi Bai International Airport
