Best way to get to Hoi An from Da Nang, Vietnam

  • Hoi An is very close to Da Nang, located just 30km apart
  • Because Hoi An does not have a train station or airport, the most common way to get there from other parts of Vietnam (like Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City) is to fly into Da Nang then transfer to Hoi An
  • The only options to get to Hoi An from Danang are: 1) public bus, 2) taxi, and 3) private transfer. No trains available. I encourage you to take the public bus because it's cheap
  • Taxi is the best option in my opinion, but I've listed out in details below how to travel by each of the three options

How to take the public bus from Da Nang to Hoi An (cheapest option):

  • There's a public bus running between these two cities and it's the cheapest option to get from Da Nang and Hoi An
  • Operator: Danang Bus, https://www.danangbus.vn
  • Route number: Line 1
  • Fare:
  • 40,000-50,000 VND per person each way ($1.75-$2.25USD) for foreigners
  • Official ticket price is 18,000 VND, but foreigners will almost never get this price. In rare cases they accept 20,000 VND, but most often you will pay 40k-50k
  • There's an additional 5,000 VND fee ($0.25USD) if you have a suitcase or large luggage
  • Frequency: bus departs daily every 20 minutes between 5:30am to 5:30pm
  • Duration: 50-60 minutes
  • Official information sources:
  • Website: https://www.danangbus.vn
  • App (highly recommend you to download): DanaBus (Android link, iOS link). The app is actually very useful; it shows you the the route and exact stop overlaid on Google Maps, and can help you route plan from your current location to find the closest bus stop
  • Danang to Hoi An Bus Line 1 route map and stops with exact coordinates (click on the pins for exact coordinates). Information comes from the official app DanaBus, which you should definitely download:

  • Use the map above to find the closest bus stop to you. It's probably the best if you go to the origin station at Da Nang Bus Station, but if you're departing from the train station or the airport, there are stops that are much closer to you
  • The destination station is Hoi An Ngyen Tat Thanh Bus Station, which is a little bit outside of downtown Hoi An. From here it's a 20-minute walk to town center or 5 minutes by taxi
  • Here's an official route map in picture form from the bus websiteUser submitted photo of Hoi An

How to taxi from Da Nang to Hoi An (best option):

  • If I had to guess, I would say taxi is the most common way for tourists to get to Hoi An from Danang
  • It is far more expensive than taking the bus, but it is very convenient, especially if you're departing from the airport or the railway station, because there will be lots of taxis waiting there to take you to Hoi An
  • Fare: 500,000 VND ($22USD) for the standard 4-person sedan. Larger cars that seat up to 7 people will cost 600,000 VND ($26USD). Payment is by cash VND only
  • Duration: 45 minutes
  • How to get a taxi:
  • From the airport or railway station: simply follow the sign to the taxi stand and find a taxi to take you to Hoi An. I recommend taking only Mai Linh or Vinasun taxis because they are the only two national taxi companies and are very reputable. Their meters are will charge you actual reasonable fares, as opposed to other taxis whose meters can rack up 2X or 3X the market rate
  • From the rest of Da Nang: call Mai Linh or Vinasun, or have your hotel call one of these two companies:
  • Mai Linh's number is +84 0236 3565 656 and this is what their cars look like:User submitted photo of Hoi An
  • Vinasun's number is +84 0236 3686 868 and this is what their cars look like:User submitted photo of Hoi An
  • With Mai Linh and Vinasun, use the meters
  • If you decide to go with another taxi company, you should agree on the fare beforehand. Again, the benchmark fare is 500k-600k VND to get to Hoi An
  • Another option is to use Grab, which serves Da Nang. In fact, I recommend Grab much more than regular taxis:
  • If you don't know what Grab is, it's basically the Southeast Asian Uber. In fact it bought out Uber's southeast asian business a few years ago. in Vietnam, its only competitor is Go-Viet, which is still very small at the moment. In Da Nang Grab is the only one available right now but in a few years I expect Go-Viet to become more widely available
  • Grab will be a little cheaper than regular taxis, at 380,000 VND ($16.5 USD) for 4-person sedan and 460,000 VND ($20USD) for a 7-person van
  • There's also almost no chance for scam with Grab, since fares are transparent and fixed
  • Additionally, you can pay by credit card, which is linked to the app
  • You can use Grab from the airport and railway station too
  • In order to use Grab, you will need to download and set up the app on your phone, You can check their website https://www.grab.com, or just download from Android or iOS app stores
  • Safety tips for taxi:
  • You will never really be in any physical danger taking taxis in Da Nang
  • But as I mentioned above, scam is rampant and taxi companies that are not Vinasun or Mai Linh will often use meters that run at 2X or 3X the rate for tourists. So you can easily rack up $40USD taxi bill from Da Nang to Hoi An
  • So please avoid taking any taxi that's not Vinasun or Mai Linh. Better yet, use Grab and avoid taking taxis altogether
