Best way to get to Kampot from Sihanoukville

  • Kampot is 100km east of Sihanoukville. It's not too far apart but just far enough that it's kind of a hassle to get travel between, especially since infrastructure in Cambodia is not super good
  • There are basically 3 ways you can travel between Sihanoukville and Kampot:
  1. Van - overall best option in my opinion, but with heavy caveats
  2. Private car/taxi - most comfortable option but very expensive
  3. Train - best option on weekends
  • Of these, I recommend taking the van. It's cheap (as opposed to private taxi), it runs every single day (rather than train which only run on weekends), and the boarding/drop off points are all in city centres (as opposed to train stations which are 10-15 minutes outside of city centres). However, the van operators are all pretty badly reviewed due to frequent delays

  • Option 1) Van between Sihanoukville and Kampot:
  • There are two van operators shuttling passengers between these two cities for fairly reasonable prices
  • Price: all the vans I came across were charging $7 USD per person each way
  • Travel time: 2h30min each way (but frequently delayed. Actual travel time can easily be double this amount)
  • The vans depart frequently between 8am and 3:30pm. Refer to the two van operators below for the exact departure times
  • Both pickup and drop off locations are centrally located in Sihanoukville and Kampot
  • Van operators: as far as my research goes, there are operators currently running on this route:
  1. CTT Transportation (van, rated 2/5 on Tripadvisor): 2 departures everyday at 8:30am, and 1:30pm; travel time is 2.5 hours; boarding point is here; arrival point is here; $7-8USD per person each way; check out their website for more details
  2. Champa Mekong (van, rate 1.5/5 on Tripadvisor): 4 departures a day at 8:00am and 11:00am, 1:30pm, and 3:30pm; travel time is also 2.5 hours; boarding point is here; arrival point is here; $7USD per person each way; they don't have a website
  • How to book: for CTT Transportation, you need to book directly through their website. For Champa Mekong, you need to book through BookMeBus which is a major online transportation ticketing agent for Cambodia and some other countries in Southeast Asia
  • Caveat: as you can see from the Tripadvisor reviews for both CTT and Champa, they both have severe delay issues that can often double the travel time. So keep this in mind and budget plenty of time for this

  • Option 2) Private car/taxi between Sihanoukville and Kampot:
  • A more comfortable option to travel between Skhanoukville and Kampot is by prearranged private taxis. The prices are of course much higher than vans and you cannot just book a single seat, you must book an entire car, but the upside is that the car picks you up from your hotel and will drop you off at your hotel. Additionally, if you have more than 3-4 people in your group, you can split the cost and it's not that much more expensive than taking a van
  • Travel time: 2 hours each way, faster than vans
  • Prices: 4-seater: $40-$55USD. You can get bigger cars, which can cost you more. A 9-seater minivan for example costs $95USD each way
  • How to book: the best way to book is to ask your hotel in Sihanoukville to call one for you. They usually have a contact and the prices will usually be lower than what you book online
  • Alternatively, you can find a taxi company yourself and contact them through Whatsapp or email. Here are some of the more established ones companies that have service between Sihanoukville and Kampot:

  2. Cambodia Expert Driver: http://www.cambodiaexperttaxidriver.com
  3. Taxi Service Cambodia: http://taxi-service-cambodia.com/sihanoukville

  • Option 3) Train between Sihanoukville and Kampot:
  • Last but not least, you also have the option to travel to Kampot by train. All trains in Cambodia are operated by Cambodia Royal Railway, and while it's not a super modern train, it's fairly clean and comfortable
  • Keep in mind though that trains between these two cities only run on weekends. See below for the detailed schedule
  • Travel time: 2 hours each way
  • Fare: $5 USD per person each way
  • Schedule:
  • Sihanoukville -> Kampot: Saturdays at 7:00am, Sundays at 7:00am and 4:00pm, Mondays at 7:00am
  • Kampot -> Sihanoukville: Fridays at 11:30am, Saturdays at 11:30am, Sundays at 11:30am and 9:00pm
