Best way to get from Taipei to Kaohsiung

  • Distance between Taipei and Kaohsiung is about 350km
  • The easiest way to get between the two cities is to take the high speed train
  • The train takes between 1:30 to 2:15 hours in duration to get to Kaohsiung, depending on the specific train. There are 75 trains everyday from 6:26am to 10:16pm, averaging every 15-20 minutes
  • Normal fare is $1490 taiwanese dollars for this route, or about $50USD. When you buy up to 28 days ahead of time, you can get 10-35% discounted tickets. The earlier you buy the more likely you can get 35% discounts (see discount rules here)
  • Train leaves from Taipei Main Station, which can be easily accessed on metro red and blue lines (the metro station is also called Taipei Main Station, or 台北車站 Chinese). It arrives at Xin Zuoying Station in Kaohsiung, which is connected to the city by metro red line
  • From Taoyuan International Airport (Taipei's main airport), take shuttle bus 705 to Taoyuan THSR station to board the train. The shuttle take 25 minutes and costs 30 Taiwanese Dollars
  • I recommend checking the latest schedule and booking your a seat online at the official website https://www.thsrc.com.tw/en. The site is in English and to book you just need a credit card and your passport number. Note that there is no "Kaohsiung" on this site. Pick "Zuoying" on this website for Kaohsiung
