Best way to get to Koh Rong, Cambodia

  • Koh Rong is an island off the coast of Cambodia. It's located about 20km west of downtown Sihanoukville (the island is actually technically part of the city of Sihanoukville)
  • Koh Rong island itself does not have an airport. The only way you can get to Koh Rong is to take a ferry from downtown Sihanoukville
  • By the way, you should note that Koh Rong is NOT Koh Rong Sanloem. They are two different islands located next to each other. It's just something to keep in mind when you book tickets so you don't accidentally end up on the wrong island

Here's step-by-step guide of how to get to Koh Rong:

  • Step 1) Get to Sihanoukville: this is very easy to do
  • If you're coming from Phnom Penh, you can get to Sihanoukville by train or bus. It'll cost about $7-$12 USD per person each way. More details here
  • If you're coming from Siem Reap, there are many daily flights to get you to Sihanoukville. It costs about $40-$60USD per person each way, and the airlines that fly this route are JC Airlines, Cambodia Airways, and Angkor Air (of these, JC Airlines has the highest rating so I recommend going with them if the schedule works out)
  • If you're coming from other countries, it's best to fly into Sihanoukville, which has an international airport. Use sites like Skyscanner or Expedia to find your flight
  • Step 2) Take a boat from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong
  • Once you get to Sihanoukville, you have lots of options to ferry to Koh Rong. When I was there earlier this year, there seemed to be 4 main ferry companies:
  1. Speed Ferry Cambodia: https://www.speedferrycambodia.com, Tripadvisor review
  2. Buva Sea Cambodia: https://www.buvasea.com, Tripadvisor review
  3. Island Speed Ferry: https://www.islandspeedferry.com, Tripadvisor review
  4. GTVC Speed Boat: http://gtvcspeedboatcambodia.com
  • All four ferries lines depart from the Serendipity Pier (located here in downtown Sihanoukville). If you're coming from the airport, it's best to take a tuk tuk or taxi to the pier for $10-$20USD and takes about 1 hour (read more details); if you're coming from elsewhere like train station or bus station, you will also need to take a tuk tuk or taxi for $5-$10USD and takes up to 30 minutes depending on traffic condition (read more details)
  • Ferry travel time: 45-60 minutes
  • Arrival pier on Koh Rong: the main port of arrival for all ferries is Koh Toch Beach (located here), which is located on the eastern shore of the island. Some ferry companies also dock on the western shore of the island, and it's best to check with the ferry company if there are other ports on Koh Rong that they go to

  • How to book ferry ticket: it's best to book your ticket ahead of time through each ferry company's website directly. They all accept credit card booking. You can also use BookMeBus, which is a major transportation ticketing site in Cambodia to find available tickets. Alternatively, you can also book in person at the Sihanoukville office of these ferry companies. They're all located around the Serendipity Pier. Check each ferry company's website for the location of their office
