How to travel between the 2 terminals (KLIA and KLIA2) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport

KLIA and KLIA2, the two terminals that make up the KL International Airport, are about 2km apart. There are basically two ways to get between them (and note that at the moment you cannot transfer between them airside, you need to clear customs and immigration into Malaysia first in order to transfer between them):

  • The first and best way is using the free shuttle bus:
  • Extremely frequent service. Runs once every 10 minutes, 24/7
  • Completely free to use, but only available to people who has connecting flights landing in one terminal and departing from another. You cannot use this shuttle if you just want to check out the other terminal without having a flight leaving from there
  • Transfer takes about 10 minutes to get between the two terminals
  • You MUST prebook online in order to use it. The website to book this shuttle bus is http://terminaltransfer.malaysiaairports.com.my/onlineregister. It takes 2 minutes to fill out the form. You need to your passport number, and your flight information (both arrival and departure flights)
  • After you booked the service, you can just go to designated waiting area and hop on the bus when it arrives:
  • In KLIA wait area is at level 1, door 4 (after you exist door 4 the wait area is directly in front of you on the other side of the street, so you need to cross the street)
  • In KLIA2 wait area is at level 1, bus bay A10 (closest to door 3). After you exit the door, just turn left and walk for a bit and you'll see it. The waiting area is on the same side of the street as door 3 so don't cross the streetUser submitted photo of Kuala Lumpur International Airport

  • The second way is to use KLIA Ekspres train:
  • This is the same train that takes you from the airport to the city, but it can also take you between the two terminals comfortably
  • Trip takes just 3 minutes by this train. Train runs every 15-20 minutes starting at 5am in the morning and ending at 1am after midnight
  • It's not free, but it's basically free. The fare is only 2 ringgit, which is equivalent to 50 cents US or 40 cents Euro
  • The train is very easy to find in the terminals. Follow the ubiquitous pink signs for "KLIA Ekspres" or "KLIA Transit". If you're really lost (you won't be) you can ask any airport staff and they can direct you to the ticket boothUser submitted photo of Kuala Lumpur International Airport

Keep in mind that regardless of which mode of transfer you use, you need to budget at least 3 hours for connecting flights (this is the official guideline for minimum transit time if you book two separate tickets) at KL International Airport. This time of course include clearing customs and immigration (which you must do to transfer between KLIA and KLIA2), picking up your baggage in one terminal and rechecking it in at the other terminal, actual train/bus transfer time, and going through security at the other terminal
