Best way to get to Langkawi from Kuala Lumpur

  • It's best to fly to Langkawi from KL
  • Flights are dirt cheap. AirAsia has direct flights from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi for $16 USD one way ($35 return)
  • Flights take 1 hour. Factoring the time to get to and from the airports and security checks, total travel time shouldn't be more than 4-5 hours
  • In KL, getting to the airport is easy by train. Go to Kuala Lumpur Sentral station, then take the KLIA Ekspres to get to the airport in 30 minutes
  • On Langkawi side, the airport is located 20RM ($5US) taxi ride away from Pantai Cenang, the main tourist hub of the island
  • Besides flying, you can also take a bus from Kuala Lumpur to Kuala Perlis, then take a ferry to Kuah on Langkawi. This option is not good because it takes much longer and is more expensive
  • Bus takes 7.5 hours to get to Kuala Perlis, and then the ferry takes another 2.5 hours to get to Langkawi
  • Unless you take the overnight bus, you will have to spend the night in Kuala Perlis because the ferry to Langkawi runs only twice a day at 8:30 in the morning and 14:00 in the afternoon. Day buses will get to Kuala Perlis usually after 17:00 so you won't make the ferry
  • Bus costs $13 USD, ferry costs another $17 USD
  • From Kuah, you can take a taxi to Pantai Cenang for 30RM ($7.5USD). However, Kuah itself has some accommodation options and is less touristy than Pantai Cenang
  • There's no train from Kuala Lumpur to Langkawi or Kuala Perlis. You can only fly or bus
