How to best see the Leshan Buddha in Sichuan, China

There are 3 ways to see the buddha:

  1. Ferry from Leshan Habour, cost only 1rmb each way. Great to get the entire view of the statue
  2. Fancier boat from Leshan Habour, you can be slightly closer to the statue than the public ferry but cost a lot more, 70rmb each way
  3. Buy an entrance ticket to the Leshan Buddha Scenic Area, 90rmb/person, you can see the statue up close

Avoid crowds:

  • Avoid peak season: April - Oct 7th
  • Go in low season: Oct 8th - March
  • Go super early during Peak season, you will find less people. We went as soon as it opened, which was 7:30am (Opening hour is 8am during low season). If you go later, you will spend 2-4hours waiting inline going down the stairs from the Buddha head to toe because a part of it is very narrow, only 1 person could pass. It still took us about 1hour to go down

Other notes:

  • Climbing up and down the staircase is quite a thrill, it's built on a cliff, so if you are afraid of heights, avoid
  • I found this image online to illustrate what I meant by "crowds" ↓ However it does have additional status on the path you won't be able to see if you take the boat
