Best way to get to Inle Lake from Bagan

The only two ways to travel to Inle Lake from Bagan is flying or bus. Flight is the best but bus is not too bad if you're on a tight budget. There is unfortunately no train service available between these two places.

  • Flight: if budget is not an issue or short on time, take the flight. Most travellers use this option
  • Price: ~USD$100 for a one way ticket + ~$20USD for taxi ride from airport to Inle Lake
  • Trip time: 40 minutes for the flight + 45 minute taxi ride from airport to Inle Lake
  • Departs from Bagan's Nyaung U airport, arrives at Heho airport, 25km north west of the lake
  • Once you get to Heho airport, you need to get a taxi to the town of Nyaungshwe, which is the main base for tourists to see Inle Lake with lots of lodging and food options
  • Air KBZ is the main airline that flies this route
  • I used Skyscanner to book
  • Bus: much cheaper than flying, but takes a full day to travel
  • Price: $15-$17 USD each way
  • Time: 8 hours
  • Bus times: 8am departure ->4pm arrival, 8:30am->4:30pm, 7pm->3am next day, 8pm->4am next day, 10pm->6am next day
  • Operators: JJ Express and Bagan Minthar. Of these, JJ Express is the one most popular with travellers and are rated extremely well on Tripadvisor
  • Departure station: both JJ Express and Bagan Minthar depart from Bagan Shwe Pyi Bus Station, located very close to the airport. They both also offer free pickup services from your hotel in Bagan, so you can save on the taxi cost of going to the bus station
  • Arrival station: located in the town centre at this spot Yone Gyi Street in the town of Nyaungshwe, in the middle of the commercial area and close to all the hotels and night market
  • How to buy tickets: you can book online or ask your hotel in Bagan to book it for you. Do it at least 2-3 days in advance (ask for the hotel pickup service when you book). If booking online you can book directly through their websites:
  • JJ Express: https://www.jjexpress.net
  • Bagan Minthar: http://baganminthar.com
