Best way to get to Penang from Singapore

  • I've done this route a few times and I can tell you the flying is the best way to go to Penang from Singapore:
  • There are many direct flights, mostly by Air Asia and Singapore Airlines, but Jetstar, Scoot, Silk Air, Lion Air also fly direct
  • In terms of cost, most of the time you can get one-way flights for around $50 USD, and return flight for $70 USD. I've seen higher fares but never more than $80-$100 USD for one way and $120-$150 for return
  • I usually book direct with Air Asia since they most often have the lowest fare
  • Flight time between Singapore and Penang is 1 hour and 30 minutes. Total travel time is 3.5-5 hours
  • Overall I highly recommend flying as it's much faster than the only alternative, which is bus
  • How to take a bus from Singapore to Penang:
  • 20%-50% cheaper than flying. Bus fare to Penang from Singapore are $35-$40 USD each way
  • Buses from Singapore to Penang takes about 10 hours. Most buses are overnight, but there are a handful of day buses
  • They depart from Golden Mile Complex, Golden Mile Tower, Boon Lay Bus Interchange (level B1 of Jurong Point shopping mall), and City Plaza. All of them are accessible by MRT metro trains
  • They arrive at either Butterworth Bus Station, or Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal in Penang. I recommend taking the buses to Butterworth as it's only a 20-minute ferry ride away to the center of George Town (and the Butterworth Bus Station is located next to the ferry terminal, you can check this guide for more info on how to get to George Town from Butterworth). Sungai Nibong, while located on the Penang Island itself, is actually a 1 hour bus ride away from George Town
  • 12Go is my go-to website for booking buses
