Best way to get to Phu Quoc from Ho Chi Minh City

  • Phú Quốc is an island 300 km west of Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
  • The best way is to fly, with frequent daily direct flights between these two places. It is possible, but not advisable, to take bus combined with boat. The latter option will take 36-48 hours to complete
  • Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Phú Quốc (the best option):
  • There are at least 14 direct flights everyday going from HCMC to Phú Quốc, departing as early as 6am and as late as 7:30pm
  • Flight time is 1 hour. Including travel time to and from the airports, the total travel time is 4-5 hours
  • Fare ranges from 580k VND ($25USD) one way on Vietjet Air, to 2,320k VND ($100USD) one way on Vietnam Airlines
  • In addition to the airfare, keep in mind that on some of these airlines you will also be paying a baggage fee that's likely to be around $10USD. It makes the total airfare $35-$100 per person each way
  • Flights depart from HCMC's main international airport (Tan Son Nhat), and arrives at at Phu Quoc International Airport. Grab is the best way to get to Tan Son Nhat airport, and regular taxi is the best way to get to the city form Phu Quoc airport
  • The three airlines that fly this route are:
  • Vietjet Air (Vietnamese budget airline): https://www.vietjetair.com
  • Vietnam Airlines (the main full service flag carrier of Vietnam): https://www.vietnamairlines.com
  • Jetstar (Southeast Asian and Australian budget airline): https://www.jetstar.com

  • Bus plus boat from Ho Chi Minh City to Phú Quốc (not a good option):
  • It is possible to travel from HCMC to Phu Quoc by land and sea. It takes about 10 hours in total and you can choose either day travel or overnight travel
  • The total cost of the trip will be around $25-$40 USD, so very comparable to a flight on Vietjet Air
  • Because the cost is not significantly better than flying and it takes 2-3 times as long as flying, I really can't recommend doing this. Perhaps the only reason you may want to consider it is to see some Vietnamese countryside on your bus journey
  • Anyway, there are two bus+boat route options you can take:
  1. Ho Chi Minh City to Rach Gia by bus, then to Phu Quoc by boat: this is the preferred option because it gives you the shortest travel time of 9 hours and you do the entire trip during the day
  2. Ho Chi Minh City to Ha Tien by bus, then to Phu Quoc by boat: this is not as good of an option because the only way to make the ferry to Phu Quoc and avoid having the spend a night in Ha Tien is to leave HCMC at midnight the day before, making this an overnight trip which is not very comfortable
  • I've listed out the step-by-step details on how to get to Phu Quoc from HCMC by bus + boat below, but keep in mind that schedule and fare is updated frequently. What you really need to know is the general steps of the trip, and where to find the current schedule and cost information. To this end, here's a list of resources you need to know:
  • 12Go (https://12go.asia): you can find and book buses from HCMC the port cities (Rach Gia and Ha Tien) where you board the boat to Phu Quoc, as well as the boat tickets from the port cities to Phu Quoc. This is the most important website to know
  • Futa Bus Lines (https://futabus.vn/en-US): this is a very popular bus company that has services all over Vietnam. You can book buses directly with them from HCMC to the port cities. 12Go is a reseller of their seats, but if you book directly with them the prices will be lower. However, their website is not as user friendly as 12Go, and obviously 12Go has other bus companies too
  • Phu Quoc Express (https://www.pqe.com.vn): they're the main ferry operator between Phu Quoc and both Ha Tien and Rach Gia. Their website is Vietnamese only, but you can find the latest fare on their site
  • https://www.phuquocislandguide.com/phu-quoc-island-ferry-schedules-fares: a very helpful website I found that lists not just Phu Quoc Express but all the ferry schedules between Phu Quoc and mainland. Use them for reference
  • Ask locals! After you've taken the bus to Ha Tien or Rach Gia, the best way to get the latest schedule is to simply ask the locals. There are many tourists going to Phu Quoc from these port cities that the locals will often have the most up-to-date information to help you get there

  • Details on the route option 1 via Rach Gia:
  • This option will takes 10.5 hours and is all during the day (6am to 4:30pm). Total cost is $35-$40USD
  • From HCMC, take Kumho Samco Busline bus to Rach Gia at 6:30am from this bus station. You can book the bus ticket on 12Go, this will cost $10USD. The bus company does not seem to let you book directly. When you book on 12Go it will let you know exactly where you board the bus
  • The bus arrives at Rach Gia at 12:30pm at the Rach Soi Bus Station, located here right next to the Rach Gia airport
  • Take a taxi to Rach Gia Port, located here. This taxi should take about 30 minutes and cost 100k VND ($5USD)
  • At the port, take the 1:45PM Phu Quoc Express boat to the Bai Vong Port on the east side of Phu Quoc. Arriving at 4PM. Again, you can book the boat ticket on 12Go, the boat operator does not seem to accept direct booking. Boat costs $17USD
  • From Bai Vong Port, take a taxi for $10USD or a shuttle bus for $5 USD to your hotel, which is likely located on the opposite side of the island (west side)
  • Details on the route option 2 via Ha Tien (the cheapest way to travel):
  • This option will take 10 hours in total, and you will spend the night on the bus. This option is not only cheaper, but because you spend a night on the bus, you will also save a night at the hotel. So this option is good for budget travellers
  • Total cost is $25-$30USD
  • From HCMC, take the Futa Bus Lines bus to Ha Tien bus at 10:30pm to Ha Tien from the Mien Tay Bus Station located here. You can either book this ticket directly through Futa Bus Line's website (https://futabus.vn/en-US) for $8USD, or book your ticket on 12Go for $10USD. When you book directly with Futa, they also provide 11:30pm and 9:30pm departure options for you to choose from that 12Go does not seem to have. However, there's more complexity and less friendly user interface when booking directly on Futa's website than using 12Go
  • The bus takes 8 hours and will arrive the following morning at the Ha Tien Bus Station, located here. If you take the 10:30pm bus, you will arrive at 6:30am. If you take the 11:30pm bus, you will arrive at 7:30am
  • Take a taxi to the Ha Tien Ferry Terminal, just 1km away, for $2USD
  • At the ferry terminal, there one of the Phu Quoc Express ferries with departures at 7:30am, 7:45am, 8:00am, 10:30am, 12:30pm, and 1:15pm. The cost is $13USD. The ferry takes 1 hour and 15 minutes to arrive at the Bai Vong Port on the eastern side of Phu Quoc. You can book the ferry on 12Go, or buy at the terminal
  • From Bai Vong Port, take a taxi for $10USD or a shuttle bus for $5 USD to your hotel, which is likely located on the opposite side of the island (west side)
