Credit card acceptance level in the Philippines

  • I would say that the usage level of credit cards in the Philippines is comparable to other southeast asian countries: cash is still the dominant form of payment, but you can use credit cards to pay for 20-40% of your usual non-hotel/flight travel expenses
  • In major cities and tourist spots, especially Manila and Boracay, you will find plenty of restaurants, shops, supermarkets, hotels, bars, that accept all major international credit cards like Visa, MasterCard, and to a lesser extent American Express, Discover, and JCB. The ones that accept cards tend to be higher end or cater to a lot of tourists
  • Tourist-oriented services like tours and activities is roughly half and half. You will always be able to find tours that accept cards but the ones that don't are likely cheaper
  • When in doubt, find the nearest mall and go in there. Most of the businesses inside the many malls in Manila and other cities accept cards
  • Places I can think of that don't accept cards:
  • You will unlikely find any smaller independent, mom-and-pop businesses accepting credit cards though even in the major cities
  • Transportation services other than airlines also don't usually accept cards. You need pay for taxi, metro, buses with cash fare
  • Markets like street markets and night markets don't accept cards
