Best way to get to Phuket from Chiang Mai, Thailand

  • Phuket is located 1,200 km south of Chiang Mai. Being two of the most popular tourist destinations in Thailand, it's pretty easy to travel between these two places

  • Because of the distance, the best way (and the only direct way) to get to Phuket from Chiang Mai and vice versa is to fly
  • There are a lot of direct flights everyday operated by Air Asia, Thai Smile (the budget brand of Thai Airways), and Bangkok Airways. I personally flew with Bangkok Airways and thought they were excellent
  • Thai Smiles:, rated 4.5/5 on Tripadvisor
  • Bangkok Airways:, rated 4/5 on Tripadvisor
  • Air Asia:, rated 3.5/5 on Tripadvisor
  • Fares: Air Asia is usually the cheapest airline costing around $100USD per passenger each way. Thai Smile and Bangkok Airways cost around $180USD per passenger each way
  • Flight time: 2 hours
  • Schedule: the earliest flight is 6:25am departure from Chiang Mai, and the latest flight is 9:45pm departure from Chiang Mai. Use websites like Skyscanner to check the current schedule
  • Getting to/from Chiang Mai airport is best done by taxi, which will cost you around 180 baht ($6USD). There will be cheaper shared taxis called Songthaews that can get you to the airport for around 50 baht ($1.7USD), but I don't really recommend them because the only way to catch them is on streets so can be difficult with luggage. Moreover, you'll be lucky to get the low rate because the only way you can get the low rate is if the driver can find a group of people going in the same direction, so you'll have to either way a long time or pay a much heftier fare. • Getting to/from Phuket airport takes to town or to the beaches: compared to Chiang Mai, there are a lot more options in Phuket to get you into the town or to the various beaches from the airport. However, the airport is located quite far from everything else so b prepared to spend pay 650-1,000 baht ($21-$33USD) for a taxi. There are cheaper options like shared minivans that'll cost just 150-200 baht ($5-$6.6USD). More details here
