How to buy a SIM card at Sihanoukville International Airport

  • Getting a prepaid tourist SIM card at the Sihanoukville is pretty straightforward. You can do so at one of the number of booths there in the arrival area
  • Where the SIM card booths are located: after you pick up your baggage and exit the customs area into the arrival hall, you will see a couple of booths ahead of you to your left selling SIM cards (they're located to the left of the airport information booth). These booths belong to the various telecom companies in Cambodia. Take a look at this picture to get a sense of the location:User submitted photo of Sihanoukville International Airport
  • There are six major telecom companies in Cambodia; of these, three have booths at Sihanoukville airport:
  1. Metfone: https://metfone.com.khUser submitted photo of Sihanoukville International Airport
  2. Seatel: https://www.yes.com.khUser submitted photo of Sihanoukville International Airport
  3. qb: http://qbmore.comUser submitted photo of Sihanoukville International Airport

  • Business hours of the SIM card booths: they're open pretty much any time there are flights landing. You don't have to worry about being able to get a SIM card no matter what time of the day you land.

  • Prices: SIM cards are extremely cheap in Cambodia. While the exact prices vary all the time, you will pay no more than a few USD for more than enough data for your trip in Sihanoukville and the rest of Cambodia. Here's the prices when I got my SIM card in Cambodia:
  • Seatel: $3USD for unlimited data for 3 days; $5USD for unlimited data for 5 days; $10USD for unlimited data for 10 days
  • qb: $2USD for 1.5GB of data, 20 minutes of call, and 200 SMS; $5USD for 4GB of data, 60 minutes of call and 500 SMS
  • Metfone: can't remember, but won't be too different from the other guys
  • Payment methods accepted are cash USD and cash KHR. No credit card is accepted so make sure you have some US dollars or Cambodian Riels on you
  • Also, to purchase a SIM card you need to show your passport

  • Network coverage by telecom:
  • Metfone 4G coverage map (https://www.metfone.com.kh/en/about-us/coverage): very little coverage in Sihanoukville at true 4G speeds (however, it uses what it calls "3.75G" which is slightly slower than 4G but not drastically, most of the apps you use to will work just fine)User submitted photo of Sihanoukville International Airport
  • qb 4G coverage map (qb uses Smart's network https://www.smart.com.kh/coverage-checker): User submitted photo of Sihanoukville International Airport
  • Seatel: it unfortunately doesn't publish a coverage map, but based on some reviews it sounds like they're pretty good around Sihanoukville

  • Best SIM card to get at Sihanoukville airport: you can't go wrong with any of them, but if I had to recommend one I'd go with qb. They're on Smart network, which has the second fastest 4G download speed in Cambodia

  • Other useful tips:
  • Cash is the only method of payment, no credit card accepted. However, you can pay with either USD or KHR
  • Check to ensure your phone is unlocked before you depart from your home country. Contact your telecom provider to check
  • Switching out your SIM card is pretty simple, and the staff at any of the booths will happily help you with it if you've never done it before
  • Passport is required to purchase SIM card
