How to visit St. Joseph's Cathedral in Hanoi, Vietnam

  • St. Joseph's is the main church in Hanoi and the seat of the Archdiocese of Hanoi. The cathedral is open to the general public to visit, whether just for tourist purpose or religious service.
  • No need to make any special appointment ahead of time, just be sure to visit during the opening hours and observe the rules of visit I will detail below

  • How to get to St. Joseph's Cathedral:
  • Located extremely central (here), the cathedral is best accessed by walking from the Old Quarter, which takes just 10-15 minutes on foot from anywhere in the Old Quarter
  • From the rest of Hanoi, a taxi or motor taxi is the best way to get to it, and should cost you no more than $3-$5 USD. Instead of hailing a cab off the street, my suggestion is to use Grab, which is Uber of Southeast Asia
  • You can also take a public bus to get to it as well, and the best way to figure out which bus to take to is to use BusMap app (https://busmap.vn). This app is connected to the latest official Hanoi bus schedule, and it can show you on a map exactly how to get from point A to B in Hanoi. But at a high level, you have some options:
  • Bus 9A and 9B will drop you off here, 4 minutes walk from the cathedral
  • Bus 2, 9A, 9ACT, and 45 will drop you off here, also 4 minutes walk from the cathedral
  • Entrance to the cathedral is the left-most door in the front of the building, like this: User submitted photo of St. Joseph's Cathedral

  • Entrance fee: none, it's free for anyone to visit inside

  • Opening hours for the general public to visit inside:
  • Monday - Saturday: 8am-11am and 2pm-5pm
  • Sunday: 7am-11:30am and 3pm-9pm

  • Mass: anyone is welcome to attend a mass there, which is primarily offered in Vietnamese, but on Sundays there is a mass offered in French followed by a mass in English
  • Monday-Saturday: 5:30am and 6:00pm
  • Sunday: 5:00am, 7:00am, 8:30am, 10:00am(French), 11:30am (English), 4:00pm, 6:00pm, 8:00pm
