How to get to Suzhou from Shanghai

  • Suzhou is really close to Shanghai, like just 50 miles away
  • Best way to get to Suzhou from Shanghai is to take the high speed train. The trip will only take 30 minutes, costing ¥35-¥40 ($5-$6) each way
  • There are over 150 daily trains on this route so it's really easy to catch one, and the best place to check the schedule and to book tickets for trains in China is Ctrip (or you can go to their English version directly at Trip.com)
  • I don't think you need to book the tickets in advance unless you're travelling around Chinese New Year (Feb/Mar). But it never hurts to book ahead of time, which you can do either in person at any train station in China or online (again, Ctrip/Trip is the best website to do that in China from my experience)
  • The trains leave from either the Shanghai Railway Station or the Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station, and arrive at either Suzhou Railway Station or Suzhou North Railway Station. Pick the Suzhou Railway Station option if you can because it's much closer to the city of Suzhou than North station. In Shanghai, either Shanghai station or Hongqiao station are equally close to downtown
  • If for whatever reason you can't get the high speed train ticket, don't worry there are a lot of normal trains that run this route too and they only take about 1 hour and 15 minutes so it's not bad. Prices of the normal trains is only ¥15 ($2)
