What to do if you overstay your 30-day Thai visa exemption period

  • If you overstay your visa-exemption, don't panic. It happens a lot and they have a pretty minimal-hassle system to deal with it
  • When you're eventually at the airport to leave Thailand, the immigration officer there will just ask you to pay a fine of 500 baht per day (CAD$20/day) of overstay, to a maximum of 20,000 baht. Payable in cash. They're will be ATMs there if you don't have enough cash left
  • If you overstayed more than 90 days, you will get banned from coming back to Thailand for certain periods of time in addition to the fine:
  • Overstay >90 days <= 1 year: 1 year ban
  • Overstay >1 year <= 3 years: 3 year ban
  • Overstay >3 years <= 5 years: 5 year ban
  • Overstay >5 years: 10 year ban
  • DO NOT GO to the immigration office or any authority in the city. Do not turn yourself in
  • Turning yourself in is the same as getting caught
  • And getting caught means they will detain you and may prosecute you for the overstay
  • Just continue your trip per usual and deal with it at the airport
