Getting in The Forbidden City


  • Hour: 8:30am - 6pm. All Monday afternoons are closed, except for National Holidays and Summer period (Jul & Aug)
  • Tickets:
  • Apr-Oct 60rmb, Nov-Mar 40rmb. Students or Kids under 18yo 20rmb; Kids under 6 free
  • Tickets do not include entrance to the Clock nor Treature exhibition, they cost 10rmb each
  • Tickets are sold until 1 hour before closing time
  • You need a valid ID to purchase the tickets
  • There will be a long line for tickets, but you can buy them online and pick up with ID at the entrance. However the online ticket portal (http://gugong.228.com.cn/) is not in English. Use google chrome browser translate function and see if you can manage
  • You can rent a audio guide for 40rmb at the entrance
  • There is only 1 entrance to get in, which is the South Gate (WuMen 午门)
  • It's easy to get lost inside, study routes before hand or hire a day tour guide, which allows you to skip line too
  • Transportation:
  • There is no park lot close by, so take taxi or public transportation.
  • Bus line 1, 2, 52, 59, 82, 99, 120, 126; Tourism Line 1; Night Line 17, 1, 2; Dedicated Line 2;
  • Metro Line 1 - Get off at Tian'anMen Square North (天安门东站) and walk 900m to get to the gate
