How to get to Mutianyu Great Wall from Beijing city center

Distance between Beijing to Mutianyu Great Wall is 75km. There are three ways to get to Mutianyu Great Wall from Beijing, all bus: direct tourist bus (Mubus), tourist bus from Qianmen, and public bus via the city of Huairou

Direct tourist bus (Mubus)

Mubus (慕巴士) is IMO the best option from Beijing to Mutianyu. It takes only 1.5 hours from Beijing to Mutianyu, and you get ~5 hours on the wall before heading back to the city. The fare is 80RMB, or 60RMB each way if bought separately, but it does not include admission to Mutianyu. Check its website at http://www.beijingmubus.com

  1. You must book your ticket ahead of time on Mubus' website. Print the confirmation and bring it with you
  2. Take the subway to Donsishitiao (东四十条) station on line 2
  3. Get out from exit C, where you should see the entrance to Swissotel and Hong Kong Macau Center in front of you
  4. Walk east on the main road (Workers' Stadium North Road / 工人体育场北路) for about 50 yards and you will arrive at the the Mubus departure point at this spot
  5. The buses leave every 10 minutes between 7:30am and 8:00am. Be on time
  6. The bus takes 1.5 hours and and will get to Mutianyu by 9-9:30am. When you get to Mutianyu, the organizer will buy your ticket for you so you don't have to do anything. Just follow the group
  7. Make sure you know the location of the returning bus boarding spot. Ask the conductor to show you if you're not sure
  8. The return bus leaves at 2:30pm and you get back to Beijing by 4-4:30pm

Tourist bus from Qianmen

If you can't get on Mubus or thinks it's too expensive, this is the second best option. Quantity is limited and only 1 bus everyday at 9am and returning at 3:30pm. Fare is 100RMB including admission to Mutianyu. Bus takes 2.5 hours from Beijing to get to Mutianyu. This bus will make 2 more stops in the city before getting on the highway. You get ~4 hours on the wall

  1. Take the subway to Qianmen Station on line 2. This is just south of Tiananmen Square so is very central. Get out from exit C and walk south for 40 yards to this spot. Look for ticket booth #4, this is the booth that sells ticket for this route (D line)
  2. Ticketing time is between 7:30am and 8:30am everyday, and bus will leave as soon as it's full or by 9am, whichever is earlier. You can book online (look for D line) but the website only in Chinese.
  3. The bus drops you off at the foot of the Great Wall and you can start climbing as soon as you get off
  4. The bus returns to Beijing from parking lot P1 of Mutianyu and it leaves at 3:30pm

Public bus via the city of Huairou

  • This takes the longest, at 3-4 hours each way
  • It's the cheapest way to get to Mutianyu from Beijing because it only relies on public transportation. You can use your Beijing transit card the entire way
  • You can follow the detailed step-by-step instructions here
