How to get to Vang Vieng from Vientiane

2 transportation methods are possible between Vang Vieng and Vientiane: bus/minivan and taxi

1. Vientiane to Vang Vieng by Bus/Minivan (the most common way):

  • This is the most popular way for tourists and locals alike
  • Price range from $8 USD to $10 USD each way. Payment can be made by credit card if you book online (just visa and mastercard usually), or by cash LAK or USD if you book in person
  • Travel time is 4-5 hours
  • Departure times range from as early as 8:30am to as late as 2pm
  • Most bus companies offer free hotel pickup service from within the city bounds of Vientiane. When you book your ticket be sure to let them know the name and address of your hotel
  • Drop off varies, some bus companies will drop you off downtown, and others will drop you off at Vang Vieng Bus Terminal situated here, from where you can take a tuk tuk to downtown for only a few USD
  • Almost all bus/minivan companies offer similar experiences all have air conditioning, rest room breaks, and good condition vehicles
  • There are many companies offering these services. Some of the most popular ones I know include these:
  • Sout Chai Travel coach bus: Tripadvisor, book through their website or 12Go. They are the biggest and most popular bus operator between Vientiane and Vang Vieng
  • Thavisouk minivans: you can book them through https://www.bookaway.com
  • Malany minivan: you can book them through https://www.baolau.com

2. Taxi/private car transfer from Vientiane to Vang Vieng

  • Expensive will cost at least 500,000 LAK (around $60USD)
  • The best way to get a taxi is to ask your hotel to arrange a taxi for you. You can't just hail one off the street and ask them to take you to Vang Vieng
  • Alternatively you can search online for providers. If you Google "Laos private transfer" or "Laos car hire" you will see some options
  • Another option is to use Viator.com and search for "Vang Vieng transfer" and you
