Wellington cable car information

  • Wellington cable car is an easy, cheap, and convenient way to travel from Wellington CBD (Lambton Quay) to Kelburn suburban area.

Trip Details

  • Trip duration: 40 minutes
  • Pick up station: Lambton quay
  • You don’t have to make any reservations since the train runs after 10 minutes all day and after every 15 minutes after 8.00 pm. My advice, purchase tickets online to avoid the ques since you still have to queue at the ticket booths if you don’t get tickets online.
  • You can either purchase one way or return tickets. Most tourists though purchase one-way tickets at Lambton Quay and make their way down by foot from Kelburn through the botanic garden.
  • The best thing about getting a return ticket is that there is no time restriction and you have ample time to tour Kelburn before deciding to come down
  • Ticket costs: One-way tickets cost $3.75 for adults and half the price for kids.
  • Holders of New Zealand super gold card get free cable car rides during peak hours.

Peak hours:

  • All weekends and public holidays
  • Mon – Fri 9.00 am to 3.00 pm and after 6.30 pm.
  • The super gold card is only given to senior citizens living in New Zealand and veterans
  • Budget Tip: If you’ll be staying in Wellington for a long period and use the cable car frequently, get a multi-trip card or snapper card to save on transport money.
