The best way to get to Wuzhen from Shanghai

  • Wuzhen is only 90 miles from Shanghai, but there's no direct train between Shanghai and Wuzhen
  • The best way to get to Wuzhen from Shanghai is to take a bus from Shanghai South Long Distance Bus Station (上海长途南站 or 上海长途客运南站), for ¥55 ($8) and takes 2 hours each way
  • Here's the step-by-step to get from Shanghai to Wuzhen by bus:
  1. From the city or Hongqiao airport (SHA), take the subway to Shanghai South Railway Station (上海南站 or just 上海南), located on line 1 (red line) and line 3 (yellow line), and get out of the subway station using exit 1 or 2. If you're coming from the Pudong International Airport (PVG), skip the subway and take the airport shuttle line 5 instead
  2. Walk southeast for about 600 yards (7 minutes) away from the train station. You'll see another big but short glass-clad building. That's the Shanghai South Long Distance Bus Station. This is what bus station building looks like:User submitted photo of Wuzhen Village
  3. Go inside to the counter and ask for a bus to Wuzhen (乌镇). Payment is by cash and your passport is required
  4. The bus will take 2 hours to get to the Wuzhen Bus Station
  5. Finally, take public bus K350, cab, or just walk from the Wuzhen Bus Station to the two scenic areas:
  • Dongzha scenic area (东栅) is less than a mile away (1.5km) so you can easily walk there in 15-20 minutes
  • Xizha scenic area (西栅) is about 1.5 miles away (2.5km) so it'll take about 30 minutes to walk there from the bus station
  • Coming back from Wuzhen to Shanghai is the same steps but in reverse. But the bus back only costs ¥49 and takes 1 hour and 40 minutes
  • Other tips:
  • Again, make sure you bring your passport with you to buy the bus ticket
  • There are 18 daily buses going from Shanghai south station to Wuzhen from 7:17am to 6:17pm, and 8 buses coming back from Wuzhen from 7:50am to 5pm
  • There's a luggage storage facility at the Wuzhen Bus Station. I think small bag is ¥3 per day and large bag is ¥6 per day, which is very cheap
  • Buses in China don't run exactly on time, so arrive 30min-1h early
  • You can't really book the bus ticket online. But unless you're going around the national holiday week (the week of October 1st), you should be able to get a seat on this route if you buy the tickets on the day of your trip
