Best way to get to Xitang Water Town from Shanghai

  • Even though Xitang is only 80km away from Shanghai, there are no direct trains between them
  • The best way to get to Xitang from Shanghai is to take a long distance bus. Luckily, Xitang is a fairly popular destination from Shanghai and there are many many buses going there everyday. You're pretty much guaranteed to get a seat without having to prebook (however if you want specific time slots maybe you should buy in advance)
  • Buses to Xitang depart from 3 separate bus stations in Shanghai, depending on where you are in Shanghai, one of these may make more sense to you than others. More details on these buses and departure stations below
  • The current bus departure times I have below are current as of January 2019. You can get the latest bus schedule on http://chebada.com (Chinese only but you can use Google translate)

More details on the 3 bus route options:

  • 1. Shanghai South Long Distance Bus South Station (上海长途南站) departures to Xitang:
  • Located here, right next to the South Railway Station
  • 13 daily departures, takes 1.5 hours
  • Current departure times: 8:45am, 10:09am, 10:13am, 11:23am, 12:19pm, 1:27pm, 1:35pm, 2:29pm, 3:29pm, 3:33pm, 4:59pm, 6:19pm, 6:25pm
  • Fare is 36RMB, equivalent to $5.25 USD
  • Getting to this station: take subway line 1 (red line) or line 3 (yellow line) to Shanghai South Rail Station (上海南站). Get out of the station from exit 1 or 2 and then walk straight for 5-10 minutes. From Pudong airport use the direct shuttle bus to South Railway Station instead of using the subway system
  • Arrives at Xitang bus station, which is 5-10 minute walk away from the entrance to the scenic area

  • 2. Hongqiao Long Distance Bus West Station (虹桥长途西站) departures to Xitang:
  • Located here, right next to the Hongqiao International Airport
  • 6 daily departures, takes 1.5 hours
  • Current departure times: 9:15am, 11:01am, 12:45pm, 2:20pm, 4:11pm, 6:05pm

  • Getting to this station: take subway line 2 (green line) or line 10 (light purple line) to Hongqiao Railway Station (虹桥火车站). Get out of the station and walk west to the western end of the railway station. If you're coming from Pudong airport take the direct shuttle bus to Hongqiao airport and walk west through Hongqiao Railway Station. (Hongqiao airport, train station, and bus station are all connected to each other with the bus station at the western end and the airport at the eastern end)
  • Arrives at Xitang bus station, which is 5-10 minute walk away from the entrance to the scenic area

  • 3. Shanghai Main Long Distance Bus Station (上海长途汽车客运总站) departures to Xitang:
  • Located here, very close to the Shanghai Railway Station (i.e. the main train station serving Shanghai)

Get out from exit 6 and leave the train station building to the main square in front of the train station. The bus station is immediately west of the square, and it looks like this:User submitted photo of Xitang
