How to get around Macau

Honestly I think walking is the best way to get to various interesting sites in Macau. The old city area that contains most of Macaus interesting sites is small that you can walk from one end to the other in 1 hour.

That being said, there are some good alternatives to walking, depending on what you are looking to do:

  • For travelling between major transportation hubs (airport, ferry port, border with China) and casinos, then you can make use of the free shuttle buses offered by the casinos. Shuttle buses do not usually take you to historical sites in Macau. Here a list of the free shuttle bus schedules of the major casinos (or just Google your hotel name + "shuttle bus"):
  1. The Venetian
  2. The Parisian
  3. Hotel Lisboa
  4. Wynn
  5. MGM
  6. Sands
  7. City of Dreams
  8. Altira
  9. Studio City
  10. Galaxy
  • If you're at a casino, it's also a good idea to use taxis to get around if you have a lot of luggage or if you want to go to historical areas. Taxis are very cheap in Macau, most rides within the city will cost you somewhere between $5-$10USD. But it's hard to get taxis outside of casinos, so they're best used if you're already at a casino and trying to go somewhere else. You can pay taxis with either Macau's currency MOP, or Hong Kong dollar (1:1 exchange rate)
  • Locals mainly use the public bus system to get around, which you can try to use as well but I don't necessarily recommend bus. It's quite difficult to know which route goes where, and they don't have a good website that you can use to find out. You can try your luck with their website, which has a route lookup component that's very hard to use. You can try using Google Maps to plan out the bus routes as well, though I'm not sure how accurate it is. Good thing about bus is that it's very very cheap, fare is 6 MOP per ride (less than $1 USD. No other currency accepted). Paying by the contactless card gets you 50% discount
